  • According to reports Overwatch 2 is set to be released in the second quarter of 2022
  • The date will be carefully chosen as to not coincide with major esports events
  • The game is eagerly awaited as it will breathe new life into the franchise

Sources claim that Blizzard is preparing the second game in the Overwatch franchise for a spring 2022 release.

Blizzard is Reportedly Getting the Game on the Market in Q2, 2022

There is hope for Overwatch fans as a new Dexerto source claims that the developers are aiming to get Overwatch 2 done by spring 2022.

According to the report, an internal Blizzard source told the news outlet that the team realizes the importance of getting the game in the hands of the players as soon as possible. The inside person said that the directors have decided to settle on the current plan for the game and finish it, instead of developing new features from scratch. The most optimistic time frame is the window before next summer.

A different source somewhat confirmed this period as a possible release date as it said that the current plans are to release Overwatch 2 anytime between April 1 and June 30. The sources said that Blizzard is taking into consideration the competitive seasons and will be wary to not launch the new title mid-season.

A Needed Change of Pace

The first Overwatch was well-received by fans and remained in the popular culture for a while. However, despite having one of the most active and exciting esports scenes, the game became somewhat exhausted, leaving fans wanting more.

Overwatch 2 is the highly-anticipated second entry in Blizzard’s first-person shooter franchise. It was originally planned to be released around the end 2021-beginning of 2022. At first, Blizzard was quite excited to make some announcements, including the addition of a functional and entertaining single-player mode and the highly controversial switch from a 6 versus 6 competitive format to a 5 versus 5. As time went on Blizzard went silent and fans started suspecting that news about a delay is inevitable.

Sadly, this turned out to be true because of various issues, likely including but not limited to COVID-19 problems, the crisis Blizzard is facing with California’s DFEH and the sheer amount of work required to make a game, Overwatch 2’s release was indefinitely postponed.

Although the news should be taken with a grain of salt as Blizzard is yet to make any official announcement about the game’s state and potential release date, the proposed release period seems highly likely. Blizzard’s fanbase has been declining in recent times and having Overwatch 2 out is one of the most surefire ways to get a lot of them back. Moreover, the game’s second iteration will breathe a new life into the competitive world of the shooter.

All that fans can do now is wait for an official confirmation of this proposed release frame.
